March 2009

No this isn’t due to the little bit of end-of-March snow we got yesterday, but RCC will be closed Tuesday, March 31 through Thursday, April 2nd for EXPANSION and RENOVATIONS. We are taking out a wall, re-doing our floors, and adding another 400 sq. feet. Very exciting stuff!!! I’ll try to post pics as we go along. Stay tuned.

Being a Reagan baby, I always loved that quote.  Being that I work in fashion and retail as opposed to international politics and anti-Communist affairs, I seldom get to use it.  Well…today is my day.  As I type this post, there is a great deal of noise behind me.  The back wall separating RCC and the Mocha Maiden Art Gallery is being torn down and rebuilt 12 feet back.  Here are the first of many renovation pics to come.

Looks like we may be closed next Tuesday-Thursday for renovations.  Nothing confirmed yet- just a heads up.  I’ll post definite info once I get it.  Thanks!

We are very excited that a lot of Akron is getting tuned into the Bullsheet!  It’s great to hear all around town that people have read this humble little blog.  Please, please, please leave us some comments!  We would love to get some feedback!

Despite the cold, rainy weather we’ve had in Akron, a few of Akron’s most prominent figures came out to enjoy the Akron- Troy Webb (facilities manager for the new downtown bus terminal), Chrissie Hynde, Tony Troppe, and Eric Vaughn- on top of the new terminal.  Love that skyline in the background!

In order to continually improve the overall customer experience at RCC, we are always thinking of new ideas, promos, designs, etc.  One of the biggest complaints (well, mostly by me) lately has been that there just isn’t enough room.  For those of you that have been in the store lately, you know I’ve got a lot of fixtures and product, but not a lot of wiggle room.  Being that I get bored here very easily when there is no one here, it would be nice to have room to dance around.  Oh yeah, and I suppose fit more merchandise and customers too!

So tomorrow is the BIG day.  Our back wall is being pushed back about 12 feet, and we’ll be getting a fancy new glass door.  At some point next week, we’ll have to shut down for a day or two to blow out our middle wall (I don’t want to hear any complaints about being closed- I’ve gone all day with only 3 customers).  I wish I could say that everything will be 100% by next Wednesday or so, but I’ve learned all to well (and this goes out to my Donna) that ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’ and neither will RCC.  Everything SHOULD be wrapped up by the first weekend in April, and we will have a FANTASTIC party to celebrate the new space.

Alright, I’ve got to go play jenga with some boxes.

Our friend Adam from Random Thoughts Escaping has just released his book, Deus ex Comica: The Rebirth of a Comic Book Fan.  The book is now available at Lulu.com.  Adam has also printed up some really cool promo cards available at RCC and at JC Comic Books and Cards in Cuyahoga Falls.  Hopefully we’ll be getting a copy in-store for you guys to check out.

Mark Saturday, April 18th on your calendar.  Adam will be doing a book signing from 1-3pm at JC Comic Books and Cards (2609 State Rd, CF).  In addition, JC will be holding a 20% off sale all day from 11a-7p!

I am very very excited to announce that I have an intern!!!!  RCC is pleased to welcome Wanida, our new intern.  Hailing from Toledo, Ohio (a fantastic city to the northwest) she currently living in Lakewood (also a fantastic city slightly northwest).  I first met Wanida when she interned for me at Anna Sui in New York a few years ago. She has her BS in Fashion Merchandising from Kent State (like me) and is currently working on her MBA at CSU.

When she’s not working at Wet Seal, Wanida is really into the Cleveland music scene, tattoos, and the Cavs.  She is so much of a LeBron WITNESS, that she has it tattooed on the inside of her lip!  In addition she’s got a really cool Ohio tattoo with a trail from Toledo to Cleveland and a brand new Cavs logo tattooed on the back of her neck.

We’re really excited to have her on board with us!  I think together we’re going to do some really cool things for RCC!  Keep on the look out for special events, more bands in-store, and lots of great promos!

Thursday evening The Greater Akron Chamber held their annual meeting at the John S. Knight Center.  With about 800 people in attendance, the GAC honored outgoing board members, welcomed new ones, and presented a vision for Akron business in the coming year.  In addition, the late Frederick J. Krum, former airport director for the Akron-Canton Airport received the prestigious H. Peter Burg Economic Development Award for his acheviements in growing the CAK airport into the regional hub it is today.  Because of Fred Krum’s untimely passing just weeks ago, the award was received by his wife and children. It was a very touching tribute to a great Akron visionary.

All in all it was a great evening.  Everyone in attendance received a limited edition ‘Akron WITNESSED First‘ shirt from RCC and GAC, as well as a plant from The Davey Tree Expert Comapany.  It was really cool to see a ’sea’ of WITNESSED shirts, as every chair in the room had one draped over.  A silent auction was also held with items ranging from an RCC t-shirt to a ride on the Goodyear Blimp to a pair of autographed limited edition LeBron James Nike Zoom VI Akron edition sneakers.

Special thanks to GAC for putting on such a great show!

Ah…March 18th.  A lot of asprin and greasy food will be consumed today to help make a lot of people feel better post-St. Patrick’s Day.  I myself had fun last night.  A LOT of fun.  Special thanks to Ray’s Pub and Matinee in Highland Square, Frank’s Place on Market, and the wonderful team at the Arlington St. IHOP for making the night great.

I’m going to go take an asprin…and maybe a nap.

The greenish beer (plus Irish margaritas) were starting to kick in.
