Tomorrow is the Cavs’ 2009-10 season home opener!  Sure you could wear a regular ‘ole Cavs jersey or t-shirt, but wouldn’t it be MUCH COOLER to wear a Cavs-inspired t-shirt?

“Turn Blue: The Short Life of Ghoulardi” airs at 9 p.m. Tuesday on WEAO Channel 49 and repeats at 2 a.m. Wednesday and 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31.Two new documentaries on men who made their names in Northeast Ohio — Ernie “Ghoulardi” Anderson and Akron Beacon Journal publishers Jack and Jim Knight — premiere this week.

“Turn Blue: The Short Life of Ghoulardi” uses interviews and clips to remember when WJW Channel 8’s late-night horror host Ghoulardi ruled Cleveland. Anderson played the character of Ghoulardi from 1963 to 1966.

“Turn Blue” airs at 9 p.m. Tuesday on WEAO Channel 49 and repeats at 2 a.m. Wednesday and 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. The documentary includes interviews with “Big Chuck” Schodowski, Dick Goddard, who appeared in many Ghoulardi skits, and The Plain Dealer’s Tom Feran and Mark Dawidziak.

“The more I learned about Ernie, the more I could appreciate him on many levels,” said “Turn Blue” producer-director Phil Hoffman, general manager of the student-run television station at the University of Akron. “The character of Ghoulardi and Ernie Anderson weren’t separated by much.”

Sneak previews of “Turn Blue” will be part of Ghoulardifest, a nostalgia convention running through Sunday at Cleveland Airport Marriott, 4277 W. 150th St. Go to theghoulardifest.com.

“Final Edition: Journalism According to Jack and Jim Knight” premieres at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Akron-Summit County Public Library, 60 S. High St., Akron. “Final Edition” also will be on WEAO, premiering at 10 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27. A repeat will be 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31.

Akron brothers John (Jack) and Jim Knight created the Knight-Ridder Newspapers Inc. group of 31 daily newspapers, including the Akron Beacon Journal, Detroit Free Press, Miami Herald, Philadelphia Inquirer and San Jose Mercury News.

“Final Edition” tells the story of the Knight family, the Beacon Journal and the rise and fall of Knight-Ridder. The company was sold in 2006.

The documentary was produced and written by Paul Jacoway, of Paul R. Jacoway Productions of Akron, and Kathleen Endres, professor of communications at the University of Akron.

Did you know that in this whole United States, there are only 2 Y-bridges with 3 ends?  Both are in Ohio- our lovely Y-Bridge that connects Broadway and North High to North Main; and the other is in Zanesville, Ohio.

Our Y-Bridge, also known as the All-American Bridge was built in 1978 to replace the deteriorating North Hill Viaduct.  Many to this day question this decision, as the Y-Bridge has cut off easy access to many local business (such as the wonderful Luigi’s) and it has become a popular site for jumpers.  According to wikipedia.org (and I don’t doubt this fact) there have been 30 suicides in the past 12 years.  You can’t walk across the bridge and enjoy the view without one of Akron’s Finest stopping because 20 people called in about a jumper.  I’ve heard at that at Vegiterranean they sit on the patio and watch for jumpers.  Hmmm…you won’t eat meat, but you’ll watch for that?  I don’t get it, but then again I thoroughly enjoy bacon.

Look for a revamped Y-Bridge over the next few years (well, after they get started) thanks to government funds to repair and fence in our beloved tri-end bridge.

Yesterday morning, someone sent me a link to a story online written by a woman who flew in the Graf Zeppelin, one of the first “blimps”, as a small child in 1933.  Had I not gone home sick yesterday, I would have posted the story then.  But, if I wouldn’t have been at home, I wouldn’t have caught the ridiculous story out of Denver of the “Boy in the Balloon”.  By now, almost everyone has heard about the 6 yr old boy who supposedly took flight aboard his father’s very odd weather balloon.  After over 2 hours, hundreds of searchers, and thousands of government funds, the boy was found to be hiding in the attic of his family’s home.

While the whole story out of Denver is a little odd and seemingly an attempt at 15 minutes of fame, click here to read a REAL story of a child in a “balloon”. In the story, the girl travels from Rio de Janiero, Brazil to Germany, with a very important stop in Akron, Ohio.   The Zeppelin voyage may have well been a trip on the Titanic (but with a better ending), with the servants, cook, and “state-rooms”.  What an incredible journey.  I can only hope one day to ride on a Goodyear blimp; I can’t imagine taking a days long trip aboard an airship like the Graf Zeppelin

I also found old footage of the Graf Zeppelin. Enjoy!

I am an avid reader of Perez Hilton (don’t judge).  One of my favorite categories on Perez’s celebrity blog is the “Separated at Birth”, where he puts up two pictures of celebrities that either look alike or have the same outfit/gesturing/etc.  The other day my boyfriend and I were flipping through the West Side Leader & watching TV.  In the WSL, there was an ad for Dr. James George, DDS.  At the same time, there was commentary on one of those variety video-clip & comment shows on E!- that showed James Lipton, of Inside the Actors’ Studio.  Vinnie swears they are the same guy.  It is pretty close.  I wonder if along with his Olympic medal, Dr. George can act?  Or maybe James Lipton is good with teeth?  Hmmm…..

Once a busy area shopping destination, the State Road Shopping Center now lies in demolition and ruins.  Let’s hope the new developers make something great out of that spot once the dust settles.  Maybe Falls City Clothing?  We’ll see…..
