About Akron

Akron. The town on a hill. Ohio’s Ak-ropolis. A shining beacon. The city that never sleeps (before like 11:00 pm, that is.) It’s a great place to live, work and play.

As an Akronite, you must have noticed how the great unwashed masses in the city-by-the-lake to the north believe that traveling to Akron is like traveling to Azerbaijan.

“Oh my,” the typical some-sider gasps as if feeling your pain. “You’re coming from Akron!”

“Yeah,” you reply. “I’ll just shoot up 77 a few exits…”

Then as if they didn’t hear you (they didn’t because they weren’t listening) they follow up with “How long does it take you to get here?”

Now here’s where we Akronites should agree on a standard response. I propose that we all learn the AirTran timetables and reply with the closest flights out of CAK. “Oh, well I guess I’ll catch Flight 17 at 1:08pm. But, of course I like to give myself plenty of time to get through security, so if I leave my house by 11:00, plus the flight, rental car, and drive to your place including potty stops, I should be there no later than 5:30.”

The reality is that popping up to the Apple store at Legacy is no more of a commute than going to the grocery for most of us (the cultured among us, that is. The sort who wear Rubber City Clothing!) If our less worldly brothers to the north would pry themselves out of their little neighborhoods they might find that there are paved roads all the way to Akron. If they would explore what is in actuality, the southern half of the same metropolitan area they might find that we have a pretty haute little culture down here (or up here - as Akron is about 400 feet higher in elevation that Cleveland) as well.
