Grandmothers Fan Club cooks up tribute to LeBron

By Jewell Cardwell

Soup’s on.

Well, not so much these days!

Rather, members of the enormously popular LeBron James Grandmothers Fan Club respond much better to ”Game On!”

Seldom do they have time for home cooking anymore, as their plates are full cheering Akron’s homegrown superstar and the rest of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA playoffs.

Individually and collectively, the grandmothers — who number 212 and range in age from mid-40s to late 90s — have reserved seats in front of the TV sets at their game-watching haunt, the newly named Sweet 23 restaurant (in honor of LeBron). The former Riverside is at 610 E. Cuyahoga Falls Ave., Akron. When resources allow, the grandmothers go to Quicken Loans Arena.

They keep late hours and burn up the phone lines, staying in touch with each other, talking about game stats. Make no mistake about it, these grannies score an understanding of the game and the terms associated with it — inside the paint, slam dunk, air ball, reach-in foul, pick-and-roll — on par with their male counterparts.

Since producing the just-released LeBron James Grandmothers Fan Club Cook Book, these die-hard fans are finding themselves doing more home cooking than usual. Just not on game night.

Oh, the temptation is there for this fun bunch to throw flour in the air when they do get together in the kitchen, like No. 23 tosses resin powder before each game, said club founder and President Alder Chapman. But the thought of cleaning up the mess cancels that action for the most part.

The cookbook, coordinated and designed by member Patricia Idley of Akron, is a compilation of favorite recipes supplied by the grandmothers. The dishes also pay homage to LeBron and the other players.

It’s divided into five categories — appetizers, soups/salads, pies/cakes/desserts, breads/cookies and main dishes/casseroles — but that doesn’t even begin to tell the story of the diverse mix of vittles inside.

On the menu

Here are a few of the recipe titles sure to whet your curiosity and your appetite:

• The Chosen One Smothered Chicken, Shaqtus Apple Pie, Green’s Perfect Two-Crust Pie Crust, and In the Paint Brownies — Idley.

• Jawad’s Peach Cobbler, Andy’s ”Wild Thing” Jumalia (that’s jambalaya with a twist) and King James Fried Pies — Chapman.

• Mo’s Breakfast Brunch Cobbler — Beverly Lee of Uniontown.

• Delonte’s Creamy Macaroni & Cheese — Betty Harris of Akron.

• Z’s Cheesy Spinach Burger — Charlotte Buzzelli of Akron.

• Jamison’s Corn Casserole — former Akron Deputy Mayor Dorothy Jackson.

• Jamario’s Black-Eyed Pea Casserole — Honey Bell of Akron.

• Technical Foul Seafood Salad — Annette Hammonds of Akron.

• LeBron’s the King Orange Punch — Donna Grimes of Copley.

• Triple Double Chitterlings — Magnolia Davis of Akron.

• Pick & Roll Heavenly White Cake — Ann Shaheen of Akron.

Chapman is buoyed by the club’s renown and how it’s grown since its 2007 inception — from 20 members to over 200 from as far away as Canton, Cleveland and Columbus — and its racial, religious and socioeconomic diversity.

Akron’s Vivian Lanier, at 97, is the oldest.

”It’s a fun group and it provides good therapy for all of us,” Chapman said.

Team comes first

A more enthusiastic and focused group you’ll never meet.

In fact, if the Cavs are playing on Mother’s Day, don’t look for these grannies to be front and center at any brunch, unless there’s a TV set nearby.

Surprisingly, the grannies in the group who are married prefer not to watch the game with their spouses. ”I’m too loud,” Idley declared.

”As for me, I like my private moments with LeBron,” Ruth Wine — a vegetarian who is the club’s poet — teased.

”We’re very excited about the playoffs,” Chapman said. ”We know we’re going to win, and that LeBron is going to stay with the team! Yeah!”

In other words, the LeBron James Grandmothers Fan Club believes strongly in the song that went to No. 1 on the Billboard charts in 1963 — Our Day Will Come.

The lead singer of the ’60s R&B group Ruby and the Romantics, which performed the song, is none other than fan club member and Akron resident Ruby Nash Garnett.

Like the others, Garnett is happy to sing the praises of Akron’s No. 23 on the court and through the cookbook.

The LeBron James Grandmothers Cook Book is on sale in time for Mother’s Day for $15, and the Granny’s Got a Brand New Bag tote is $12. For information, please call Alder Chapman at 330-329-8364 or 330-784-2544; Kattrice McGinnis, 940-224-0775; Patricia Idley, 330-867-8525; or Ruth Wine, 330-714-8883.

Proceeds go to the grandmothers’ projects, like Mentoring Mothers and an outreach for senior citizens who like line dancing.

By the way, these grannies have their own wardrobe of T-shirts honoring their adopted grandson (many of them provided by Nike) and their own license-plate frames.

They also have a cheer:

Grannies Rise Up.Grannies Rise Up.Grannies Rise Up for LBJ!

Congratulations to Akron’s own LeBron James for winning the NBA MVP award two years in a row!!!

No, not the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame….we need a couple of championships and about a dozen more winning seasons in Cleveland before that happens.  LeBron is SURE to be inducted into the under-development National High School Sports Hall of Fame Museum.  Scheduled to open in 2011, details of the planned museum have slowly been leaking out, and an official announcement was made Monday.  The museum will be in Easton, Pennsylvania- in the Lehigh Valley (southeast PA).  Congratulations to Easton, the NHS HoF will be sure to bring in tourists- and maybe a certain basketball-superstar-Akronite.  Just remember, we WITNESSED first at STVM!

Tonight is the home opener for the Cleveland Cavaliers 2009-2010 season aka THE YEAR WE WIN IT ALL!  Vinnie is wearing the 10x Your City “SHABRON” t-shirt to the game.  Go Cavs!

Akron on HBO

HBO Sunday night programming is by far some of the best stuff on TV.  It got a little better last night when not one but two hit shows featured cameos by famous Akronites.  First, on the season finale of Entourage, megastar Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) was being hounded for charity donations by Oscar winner Matt Damon.  When Vince didn’t send a big enough check, Matt Damon surprised him at a private airport with an entourage of his own to collect.  Who was the standout in the charity entourage?  Akron’s own LeBron James (at 6′8″, he definitely stood out).  LeBron delivered a couple of funny lines and wore some pretty awesome glasses. Can’t seem to find a clip of the scene just yet, but I did find this clip of LeBron on set.  He’s wearing the same great nerdy glasses he’s wearing on the show. If basketball doesn’t work out, he’ll definitely have a shot at show business.

The next Akronite cameo on HBO came on the new series Bored to Death. If you haven’t seen it yet, it has Wes Anderson/indie-darling Jason Schwartzman and funny bearded man, Zach Galfinakis (The Hangover). In last night’s episode, Jason Schwartzman’s character meets Akron native and indie film director Jim Jarmusch. Jarmusch directed films like Dead Man, Ghost Dog, Broken Flowers, and one of my favorites, Coffee and Cigarettes. Jarmusch played his eccentric self quite well. Hopefully he’ll get the Akron bug like Chrissie Hynde and want to come back someday.

Akron is one talent-breeding town!

Akron’s own, LeBron James faced a tough match-up t earlier today when he sat on the new banana couch (thanks Joel McHale) with the ladies of The View.  LeBron was a perfect model of hard work, class, and determination….kind of like Akron.  Listen for Akron’s shout-out at the 5:20 mark. Check out the video below:

Today millions of students across the nation will be ’schooled’ by President Obama, LeBron, & Kelly Clarkson.  No, it’s not a students vs. celebrities basketball game (I’d highly question Kelly Clarkson’s skills on the court); the ’schooling’ is actually at school.  Get Schooled, a special documentary about the importance of education and following your dreams to success will air in schools across the country, as well as at 8pm on Viacom networks like MTV (nice they could take time away from quality programming like The Hills or 16 and Pregnant), BET, Nickelodeon, and more.  This special is a school year kick-off to encourage students to take this new year seriously and excel in their studies.

Fifty years ago, Akron students got a little ‘kick-off’ in the form of a textbook written by an APS teacher, Sara Klippert.  ‘The Akron Story’ was a supplementary text book distributed to 11,000 Akron Public Schools fourth-graders.  The book served as an imaginative way to tell the history of our city, and build local pride in Akron youth.  Featuring illustrations and vintage photos, the Akron Story, tells the fictional tale of twins David and Diana who move to Akron after their father takes a job with a rubber factory.  The twins immediately love their new city and are determined to learn all they can about it, including joining a local pride club called Norka Wonki (which is I Know Akron backwards).

This seems like a great way to instill local pride in youth.  It’s been quite a while since I passed through the APS system.  I recall a little Ohio History for one semester when I was in seventh grade.  Honestly, before I began working with RCC, I vaguely knew the Simon Perkins story and the history of Goodyear/Tires.  I had no idea about John Brown, Sojourner Truth, Akron’s rich music history, the Toy Marble Museum, and all the other things that were Made in Akron or that Akron Witnessed First.  It would be money quite well spent by APS to update the Akron Story.

If anyone knows of an available copy or would like to display theirs at RCC, please call Sarah at 330.434.4722.

LeBron Weekend

This weekend is chock-full of LeBron James.  On Thursday night, a lucky few WITNESSED LeBron at a screening of the documentary, More Than a Game, at the Civic Theater.  The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival two years ago; after making the festival rounds, it has returned home to Akron, Ohio.  More Than a Game will open in select theaters nationwide on October 2nd.  In addition to the film event at the Civic, there was a pre-party at WE Gallery (where I happened to bump into Mr. Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon….weird); and a post-party at Big City Chophouse.  On a related note- stop down to the Chophouse where you can check out a LeBron-autographed STVM horse that was auctioned off for Akron Children’s Hospital.

LeBron Weekend action continues Saturday with the ‘King for Kids Bikeathon’ downtown.  The event includes a 8 mile ride with LeBron and other celebrity cyclists, as well as a 3 mile family-friendly bike ride.  Then everyone will congregate at Lock 3 for an after-party filled with food, entertainment, and fun.  It is sure to be a fun day, with proceeds from the event going to the Akron Urban League and the Akron Area YMCA.  For more info on year-round biking, check out Bike Akron.

LeBron James is a role model to youth and adults all over the country (especially in Akron) for his incredible skill in basketball, charitable donations, and likable personality.  Now he will be a role model for education to kids across the nation when he appears alongside President Barack Obama and American Idol Kelly Clarkson in a 30 min documentary about the importance of education & working to achieve your dreams.  The special is scheduled to air September 8th at 8pm on channels like MTV (thank God they’ll have to turn off their lame reality shows for half an hour), vH1, BET, CMT, Spike TV, Comedy Central, and Nickelodeon.  Maybe it will show LeBron at St V?

Akron’s favorite son LeBron James stopped by his old alma mater, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School to launch his latest line of sneakers.  The Nike Air Max LeBron Zoom VII’s kicked off their 10-city tour debut at St. V yesterday.  Future stops include London, Paris, and Shanghai.  Hmmm….yet another case of Akron WITNESSING First!
