Congratulations to one of our favorite local artists, Todd V & friends for winning the Akron Film Festival’s “The NEW History of Akron”. Todd V and Christopher “Blue” Green made a great “mockumentary” titled “BLIMP…Our Blemished Past”. The film stars WE Gallery’s Erin Ludlam and others telling a different version of the blimp’s history in Akron. Check out the mockumentary:
This weekend is chock-full of LeBron James. On Thursday night, a lucky few WITNESSED LeBron at a screening of the documentary, More Than a Game, at the Civic Theater. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival two years ago; after making the festival rounds, it has returned home to Akron, Ohio. More Than a Game will open in select theaters nationwide on October 2nd. In addition to the film event at the Civic, there was a pre-party at WE Gallery (where I happened to bump into Mr. Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon….weird); and a post-party at Big City Chophouse. On a related note- stop down to the Chophouse where you can check out a LeBron-autographed STVM horse that was auctioned off for Akron Children’s Hospital.
LeBron Weekend action continues Saturday with the ‘King for Kids Bikeathon’ downtown. The event includes a 8 mile ride with LeBron and other celebrity cyclists, as well as a 3 mile family-friendly bike ride. Then everyone will congregate at Lock 3 for an after-party filled with food, entertainment, and fun. It is sure to be a fun day, with proceeds from the event going to the Akron Urban League and the Akron Area YMCA. For more info on year-round biking, check out Bike Akron.
Yesterday I wrote about the unfortunate budget cuts the city needed to make. 21 people lost jobs, and the city lost a few beloved community programs. While nothing can cushion the blow of a lay-off (we can only hope once there is room in the budget that these folks can return to their jobs), we still have city programs that will continue to grow & help grow Akron- like the Downtown Artwalk. Organized by the Downtown Akron Partnership, the artwalk is held the first Saturday night of every month. Dozens of downtown/north side galleries & shops stay open late and feature the latest & greatest on the Akron art scene. There’s even a free trolley that drops artwalkers off at each location (though on a nice night, it’s a great trip on foot). There’s no cost to attend the Artwalk, though you may want to pick up a painting, sculpture, or a few dozen t-shirts. Plus, this month there is a live concert at 111 North Main St (in the CarGear parking lot- across from Luigi’s) featuring Mike Lenz, Ryan Humbert, and our good friends Maid Myriad. There will also be street performers walking about downtown for your enjoyment. The Artwalk is always a good time, and even won a prestigious Zenith Award for Hospitality Partnership back in May.
Come down this Saturday and check out all of the stops, including WE Gallery, Urban Kanvas, Mocha Maiden & Musica, and of course RCC!
Let me begin the tale this way…Monday night/Tuesday morning I was peacefully sound asleep, when my phone vibrated under my pillow. I woke up and looked down, it was Wendy (the fantastic woman who built my new retail counter). I thought surely it had to be a mistake, so I let it go. Then she left a voicemail, “Ah…hi Sarah, this is Wendy. Just wanted to let you know that RCC and WE Gallery have been broken into…” I threw on shoes and headed downtown in my pajamas. No jacket, no brushing of the hair and teeth. Nice, right?
I got downtown in no time at all. As I pulled up, both RCC and WE Gallery looked the same- all lights on, glass doors shattered- the frames clutching a few pieces of broken glass while the rest lay all over the floor. The floor was not only covered in shattered pieces of glass, but also coins, paper, and pieces of my busted up register. The scene at WE was exactly the same. It was all quite heartbreaking- personally, business-wise, and overall sad that this happened in what is a changing and improving neighborhood.
Unfortunately there were no witnesses (esp. of the LeBron variety), but here is what we can presume happened:
Dumb Ass Crook decides to break into nice little shops on North High St. Dumb Ass Crook then finds a few good-sized rocks to throw through the glass doors of said nice little shops. Dumb Ass Crook hits RCC first- shattering our glass door and then helping his way in. Dumb Ass Crook heads straight for the register (strangely bypassing the very valuable autographed LeBron James basketball and stacks and racks of cool t-shirts), and proceeds to get the register, which is shut and locked. Being that he can’t get it open in its current place, Dumb Ass Crook decides to RIP (not unplug or even cut) the cord to the register. He then carries it over to the floor in front of the counter and begins smashing it all over the place. Eventually the register shatters and the cash drawer is open for grabs. Dumb Ass Crook makes off with a little cash, leaving all the shattered glass, pieces of register, coins, and other miscellaneous items strewn about. Lather, rinse, repeat….Dumb Ass Crook then heads over to WE Gallery to do the exact same thing. However, as soon as he hurls the rock, Dumb Ass Crook is scared by the VERY LOUD alarm that sounded off. He dashes to the register, smashes it to bits and again makes off with a little cash. Dumb Ass Crook flees the scene. Luckily the security company was able to alert Karen from WE right away, and Akron Police were quick to respond; but sadly Dumb Ass Crook was nowhere to be seen.
The APD are still looking for Dumb Ass Crook. If you have any information, please contact Detective Daryll Parnell of the APD at 330.375.2464. We appreciate the APD and all the support we’ve gotten from our friends & fans. It’s stupid stuff like this that can hold Akron back from being a great, safe place to live.
Cleveland Fox 8’s morning show, That’s Life with Robin Swoboda is airing a special on the best places to go in Ohio’s most charmingly cool city. I’m obviously talking about Akron, and of course RCC is one of the best places to visit!
See us this Monday, February 16th at 10am. Along with us, some of our great neighbors like WE Gallery, Mocha Maiden, Uncorked, Musica, and Noto; as well as Don Drumm & West Point Market will be featured.
This is going to show that Akron is waaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more than Cleveland’s little sister to the south. I’ll get the video up asap. Catch it live (or DVR/Tivo…if you must).
The Historic Northside District is by far the most hip and up-and-coming neighborhood in Akron. It’s the hub of the arts, music, shopping and going-out scene in Downtown Akron. Galleries like WE Gallery, Urban Canvas, and the newly moved City Art are providing a home for Akron’s most creative artists; Musica and The Northside showcase great local (and some national) music acts; Rubber City Clothing and Noto are keeping Akronites dressed to impress (who isn’t impressed- and a little scared- by a “Where the Weak are Killed and Eaten” shirt?); and Crave, Big City Chophouse, Luigi’s, and Snooks remain some of Akron’s best places to eat (though we could use a Swenson’s down here- I’m thinking across from RCC on High St). Plus, we’ve got the Akron Art Museum and the Akron Public Library’s Main Branch on our turf.
Come to our little neck of the woods this Saturday, February 7th from 5 until 10ish (whenever everyone else starts to leave, really) for the monthly Art Walk. All of the galleries and shops will be open with extended hours to host patrons of the arts (and anyone looking for something a li’l different to do on a Saturday night). The weather has been pretty mild for February, so get out and enjoy Akron’s cultural scene! In addition, our backdoor neighbors Mocha Maiden Gallery and Uncorked Wine Bar will be hosting an open house for the newly moved and renovated space. Enter off of Maiden Lane (by the Mocha Maiden entrance) or come in off of North High St (you can enter through the gallery’s front door, WE Gallery, or Rubber City Clothing. Hope to see you there (and pick up an RCC shirt while you’re at it!)!

Thanks to everyone for their patience these last few days with the remodeling going on at Rubber City Clothing. Sorry that it extended into Wednesday, but the extra day was much needed. We’re just about done, with fresh paint, new fixtures, and some more sales space. It’s working out so much better than we originally planned.
The store is really coming together, with special thanks to Karen & Wendy from We Gallery next door. They have done an AMAZING job of creating, building, and installing a lot of the new fixtures in the store. We’d also like to thank Beth from the Akron Art Museum, for helping us out with her stellar painting skills. These girls are truly awesome. We’re open back up now, with a few more little changes to come. All should be complete by Monday, so come in and check out our revamped space!
Our new holiday line should be coming in soon- about 2 weeks. We’ve got some really cool new designs, plus some new colors of some of your favorite RCC classics. We’re also getting some replenishment of some things we’ve been out of stock in, like the Li’l Slugger t-shirt and hoodie, the “330″ hoodie, and our Route 8 line. We are taking pre-orders on some items, so if there’s something you know you want, give Sarah G a call at the store- 330.434.4722 and let her know.
